Save Time and Money -- Buy a Good Toilet the First Time!

I, Bill Brink, make my recommendations based upon gram ratings, quality control, repair costs, bowl cleaning action and overall quality.

I recommend toilets from Toto, Eljer, Gerber, Kohler, American Standard, and Briggs.

A favorite is the Toto “UltraMax” #MS854114S because it is commercial grade, quiet, consumer friendly, and has a powerful 3-inch flush valve. It flushes 700 grams. Toto's Website

Another good option is the Toto “Drake” -- a quiet, commercial grade toilet with a 3” flush valve that flushes 900 grams. It is contemporary, stylish and has probably the best flush around. Toto's Website

In the Eljer product line, I recommend their “Titan” with a 3-inch flush valve and good flushing of 900 grams. Eljer's Website

In the Gerber product line, I recommend their “Ultra Flush” as it does a good job, has lots of power at 1000 grams, and is commercial grade. The only downside is it's a bit noisy. Gerber's Website

In the American Standard line, I recommend the “Champion,” with a large 3.5 inch flush valve, good-to-fair performance, and 800 grams of flush. However, I have to say “keep repair parts handy”. American Standard's Website

Solving Common Toilet Problems

  • Step 1: Check the water level in the tank, it may be too low. Check to see if the water level reaches the manufacturers water level line as found inside the tank. If not, then adjust accordingly.
  • Step 2 : If the water level is correct but the flush is still inadequate, then check the adjustment on the flapper, tank ball and/or guide if so equipped and set to manufacturer specifications.
  • Step 3: If the flush is still inadequate, then check the small ports around the underside of the bowl for residue from chemicals that can clog these ports and prevent a sufficient amount of water from running out into the bowl. To facilitate this, use a small mirror to help you examine the holes (jets) and a piece of coat hanger, wire brush or Phillips screw driver to ream out any clogged debris.
  • Step 4: Check for tank sweating with the cause being the difference between the temperature inside the tank and the temperature of the surrounding air.  (It is this difference that causes the sweating.) Call us for solutions.
  • Step 5: Check the wax ring, because it's possible that water may be seeping out from under the toilet bowl.
  • Step 6: Check the tank and bowl for cracks.  If you find any, the toilet should be replaced.
